MISSION TRIP!

We leave THIS Sunday, May 24 at 9:00 a.m.

We will be going to Puerto Penasco, also know as Rocky Point.  It is a fishing and tourist town of 60,000 people located on the Sea of Cortez.  It is 60 miles inside Mexico and about 240 miles from Phoenix.  100% of our trip fees goes toward the house construction and 1Missions ongoing operation in Mexico.  Each family that gets a house built for them is required to volunteer their time in community service to earn their house.  Currently the family we will build for lives in a temporary structure constructed from whatever materials they are able to salvage from the area or the local landfill such as cardboard, wooden pallets, car hoods, old boat hulls and discarded construction material.

Over the course of 2 1/2 days, we will construct an 11' x 22' house that will provide basic shelter.  We will be working alongside local volunteers and community members.  And we won't use any power tools!

We will be staying at the 1Mission base camp in bunkhouses.  It is located approximately 8 miles north of Puerto Penasco.

They sent us a typical schedule of our time there:

Day One:  Eat breakfast, pack a sack lunch and drive to the job site (you will drive your own vehicle to the site). You will meet your family for the first time. You will mix concrete in wheelbarrows, pour the concrete slab floor and frame the walls. After returning to base camp you’ll have dinner prepared by local volunteers and then your evening is free. You are welcome to go into Puerto PeƱasco and explore the city provided that your group leader approves and you notify 1Mission staff of your intentions.

Day Two: You will get up (a little slower than Day One) take some Advil or Tylenol and then eat breakfast, pack your lunch and head to the job site. Today you will erect the walls and roof, wrap the house with tar paper and chicken wire and then complete the first coat of stucco on the exterior walls.
After returning to base camp you will prepare for Fiesta Night! This evening your family will join us to share our evening meal. This will be a time where you can get to know the family better and work on your Spanish language learning. Fiesta Night will end around 8:00 and the rest of the evening you are free to do whatever you choose, which, after two days of hard labor, usually means going to bed.

Day Three: You will get up even slower than Day Two, more Advil, eat breakfast, give thanks that you don’t have to work like this everyday, and then leave for the jobsite. Today is an easier day since you should only have to do the second coat of stucco and clean up the job site. You will do a house dedication ceremony with the family where you’ll turn over the keys for the house.
And then comes the hard part…saying goodbye to the new friends that you’ve made.
After returning to base camp there will be lunch provided and then your weekend concludes.

Hey G.A.M.P. Families

It is time to start planning for Summer Camp.  At this point, we are thinking we will go to the second week of Super C camp again.  The camp week is June 24th through 29th and the cost is $155 if registered prior to 3/31.  We will have costs for travel as well.

The rooms hold 8 people, so we can take 7 guys in my room and 7 girls in Pam’s room.  We will be assigning those in our room on a first come, first served basis.  So, if you want your child to be with Pam or I, you will want to get me your $45 non-refundable deposit as quickly as possible.  Those not in the first 7 will be placed with a “family” leader from a different church unless we have another male sponsor that will be going.  Currently, the only male sponsors we have are Ted Berning and I, and Ted will not be going to camp.

About the camp:  this is a very deep camp that has a lot of Bible memorization.  The speakers are quite direct, and the message is great.  There is a full week of both guys and girls learning how chivalry should work.  Everyone is required to be modest in everything they do.  It is a small group of around 60 campers, so they build some great relationships with kids from other churches.  Last year was the first time in the past 5 or 6 years where we have had our kids make serious spiritual decisions and lay down and discuss deep spiritual issues.

I am trusting in God for an even deeper camp experience this year.  Hope you can all join us.

God Bless

Praying for our friends, the Brandt's, as they came back for a visit as they continue their move from Wichita.

Also, we will not have GAMP next Wednesday, January 16 due to sponsors' conflicts.

We will meet again on Wednesday, January 23, with a special message from Pastor Secor!

Fun at the Barn

Hey G.A.M.P. Families

We are going to do our annual “Fun at the Barn” on Friday from 6:30pm to 11:00pm.  For those that are new, this is a large “barn” in the middle of nowhere that has a basketball and volleyball court in it.  So, we will be playing some volleyball and some basketball, so come prepared to sweat!  Of course, some come more as spectators than players, and that is just fine.  Me, well, I have been working on my basketball game, so I am ready to play. J

The address to the barn is:

19900 W. Central

It is the shed next to (EAST) the house. It is on the corner of 199th and Central, but on Central (4th street). It has its own driveway.

Please bring $5 as we will have Pizza and drinks at the Party.

Look forward to seeing everyone.

Service Project and Christmas Party

We are going to do a Service Project and Christmas party on Wednesday, December 19th.  We will be ringing the bells for the Salvation Army at Dillons at Central and Maize from 3pm to 8pm for both doors.  If you are interested in participating, please reply to this email and Pam or I will put together a schedule to cover the doors.

Following the Service Project (8pm), we will have our world famous Christmas Party.

Everyone is invited to come and hang at the Bauer house during the service project.  We will be eating for those that are there.  Please RSVP so Cheri knows how much food to make, even though she will make too much.

Looking forward to another awesome Christmas time!
